Bock in German means GOAT. That’s why there are goats on bock labels. Goats are awesome. Goats have spectacular balance and coordination, and some even jump up to 5 feet high!
- A troop of goats is called a trip.
- Goats are great swimmers.
- Goats discovered coffee beans.
- Goats have rectangular eyes that allow them to see better in the dark.
Doppelbock is fuller-bodied, and a stronger and maltier version of bock, such as my beloved Texas Shiner Bock (the beer that accompanied me through my doctoral program). This should be a nice early winter drink when it’s ready in 6 weeks or so.

Why Goat Rodeo? The Goat Rodeo sessions was a project that brought together cellist Yo-Yo Ma, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer and mandolinist Chris Thile. Aoife O’Donovan (of Crooked Still, one of our favorite bands ever) also sings on 2 tracks. A “goat rodeo” refers to a chaotic situation with no order or sense, and with different and potentially competing agendas/perspectives/outlooks on the situation. The music that came out of these artists in their goat rodeo is pretty fantastic.
